Your Favorite Teacher and Why:

Mr. Neprud was my high school band director. He encouraged me to challenge the first chair clarinet player during our seat competitions, and I won. That was the first time I can remember a teacher really encouraging me to take a risk--and it paid off. I was thrilled that I had unseated an upper classman for that first chair position.

I am honored that I took part in saving my husband's life on January 22, 2016. My husband died from a sudden heart attack in our living room and fell at my feet as I walked into the room. I performed chest compressions until the ambulance arrived. The first responders pronounced him dead on arrival. They used an external defibrillator and did get a pulse after three attempts. The doctors said Billy is truly a miracle as only 5% of humans survive being dead for 16 minutes and only 2% survive without brain damage. I am so thankful for the wonderful people who helped us that day.

I have seven grandchildren. My oldest grandson is going to basic training this month for the Navy. I taught 23 years in West Virginia and will retire from my teaching career in October of this year. The best part of WHS is the people!  I love the people I work with and the students we teach.

Your Favorite Teacher and Why:

My favorite teacher was Mrs. Johnson my Government teacher.  She was also my teacher for two electives: Comparative Religions and Post WWII.  Mrs. Johnson treated all of her students like her peers.  When I had her she has been teaching for well over 20 years, but she still took the time to understand the lives of her students.  She taught difficult subjects, but she was able to make the information understandable and fun.

Accomplishments or Honors You Have Achieved That You are Proud of:

I am National Board Certified which took a lot of time and effort, but I am most proud of the honors I have received because of my students.  Being voted favorite teacher seems like a minor thing, but it is super special to me.  I was also awarded the Rotary WHS Teacher of the Year which is a student nomination award.  But the biggest honor to date is being the recipient of the Dawbarn Award.  This is a huge award, one that I never thought I would receive, but it is made even more special by the fact that a student was the one who went through the process to nominate me (thank you Elizabeth Maneval).

Something Most People Don't Know About You:

I feel like I am very open and honest with my students,  but something they may not know about me is that I have an instagram account that is purely about books.  Yes, I am proud of my nerd status.
