Statement Re: WHS JV Football

Statement Regarding Waynesboro High School JV Football

Waynesboro High School is faced with a situation that is occurring in many school divisions around the state.  Currently there are 28 high school athletes (3 seniors, 6 juniors, 15 sophomores, 4 freshmen) and 8 middle school athletes (8 eighth graders) involved in our football program. The VHSL handbook states, “The League recommends that no member school which has less than 25 students physically fit and eligible for participation engage in varsity football.” Based on the number of athletes, Waynesboro High School will not be fielding a junior varsity football team for the 2019 season. The JV program is not being eliminated and hopefully can be restored in 2020.

Numbers throughout the season will naturally decrease due to attrition and injuries. This decision will allow Waynesboro High School to field a varsity team consisting of 9th-12th graders, exceeding the 25 member threshold. Fortunately, 8th graders will have the opportunity to participate in the little league or Spartan programs. While we are disappointed in this situation, we believe this solution provides the best opportunity for our student athletes to have a positive experience playing football in 2019.
